Lighting the Amazon Kindle Fire…

Carlos Icaza, Ansca Mobile
Team,

Starting with tonight’s daily build, PRO subscribers will be able to build for the Amazon Kindle Fire tablet.
Yes, we heard you — and even though we are still testing Kindle Fire builds from Corona, we feel confident enough to enable the option to build for it starting tonight.(!!!)
I want to emphasize two things:
- This feature is only enabled for PRO subscribers and currently will only be available through our Daily Builds.
- There are, as with any “just get the bits out the door” releases, bound for bugs to happen — so, you’ve been forewarned!
It would make our life much easier if you help us by entering bugs through our bug tracking system. Entering bugs in blog comments is a lot less systematic for me and my team, so pretty please use the tracking system to bring any and all bugs to our attention.
Of course, I do encourage you to let us know what your overall feelings are, whether in the comments or forums, as usual.
Happy coding and welcome the Amazon Kindle Fire!
Carlos
P.S.: Contrary to popular belief, the Kindle Fire is not your typical, run-of-the-mill, stock Android device. So, we are treating it as a separate platform altogether, especially for when we start adding Kindle Fire-specific features.(!!!!!)
P.P.S.: Please read the release notes to make sure that the bits make it into the Daily Build. As write this, the bits have been enabled, code reviewed, and everything is ready to kick off the build.
Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet!
Anyone notice anything funny on the Amazon Kindle Fire image?
Mad Men
Yes we are mad as loco.

The Daily Builds are like getting little presents every day!
Thanks @Ansca!
Yippee!!!
Thanks Carlos!
Excite!
+1 – Awesomeness!
Congratulations Asca Team.

if its being treated at a seperate platform will it mean a new licence type or will it require just the android licence?
Hi,
That’s pretty cool, but I thought Amazon was testing all Android apps already in their store, anyway, to check that they can run on the Kindle Fire. Isn’t it the case? Is there –or will there be– a specific Kindle submission form?
Ch.
So, is this enabled now?
I’ve checked both 2011.687 (which is linked in P.P.S.) & 2011.688 release notes and no mention of that.
Yeah, and I don’t see a Kindle Fire option in the emulator.
I have downloaded 2011.688 right now, but there is no Kindle Fire Simulator?
And in the Build settings i also nothing..
Regards,
Alen

This is exciting, because we actually have a Kindle device in the house and I think this would go very well with it. Though, I’m not a pro developer, and will just have to wait to use it.
Looks like there was a snafu and some of you are still reporting “Trial” being displayed on the Fire. We are on top of this and trying to get to a solution fast.

So will the Fire show up in the simulator options ? I downloaded and don’t see it.
I saw the “trial” popup when testing on the Kindle Fire too, hope this gets resolved! exciting news!
I tried to rebuild some of our apps with the new daily build and test them on Kindle Fire. I can confirm that everything works fine except the Trial version message. Just remove the message and we will be able to publish our apps for Kindle Fire. Thank you, good work!
Matthew it’s not in the sim options. But its same form factor as galaxy tab 1024×600. And when you build, amazon is an option
Congratulations, Corona! Very timely release.
I didn’t see it in the simulator, but was able to do a build with the Amazon/Kindle option. Now if I could just figure out how to put the apk on my Fire!
PamL: It is not a problem. Just allow installation from unknown sources on your Fire (Settings/Device). Then you have many options how to copy your apk to your Kindle Fire. Some people just send it by e-mail, I usually use ES File Explorer which can copy it from your shared network drive.
Here’s a quick “how to install an App on the Fire”:
… Alright, a little searching and I figured this out… here’s the FYI:
To do it with USB:
– From the upper right corner on the Fire, go into “Settings”, then “More”, then “Device” then “Allow Installation of Applications” to “On”.
– In “Finder” on your Mac (assumably explorer on Windows), drop your .apk basically anywhere.
– Back on the Fire, you need some type of “File Explorer” app. I searched the Amazon App Store and installed the first free one I found.
– Open the file explorer, find your App (was easiest to figure out the directory structure by looking at the folder modified times) … Tap your app and go through the install process.
That’s it!
(… Assumably, you could also just email the apk to yourself and open it with email for installation… or put it somewhere on a web page for yourself and open it with Silk.)
Awesome. Thanks guys!
